2024 Grants Approved for Reforestation Efforts

The Friends of McKennan Park Neighborhood Association is excited to announce through the City of Sioux Falls’ Neighborhood Grant Program we have been funded to support planting 40 trees this year along the boulevards throughout the neighborhood.

The project aims to bring back trees to the neighborhood and has been made possible in large by an effort from Rachael Meyerink, recent to the FMPNA from All Saints where she led similar projects for years. Urban reforestation offers various benefits, including cooling the environment, increasing safety, boosting property values, beautifying the community, and improving air quality.

Cost and Tree Varieties:

Thanks to the grant funds, trees that would normally cost around $190 each will be available to neighbors for $40 plus tax per tree. There are several tree species available for selection, including Autumn Splendor Buckeye, Northern Catalpa, Northern Acclaim Honey Locust, Espresso Kentucky Coffeetree, Heritage Oak, Northern Red Oak, Swamp White Oak, Greenspire Linden, Boulevard Linden, and Accolade Elm.

Sign-Up Process:

Neighbors interested in reserving a tree need to complete an inquiry form before the deadline of June 30, 2024.

Approval and permitting processes are required before tree reservations can be finalized. The property owner will be responsible for locating utilities, etc.

Timeline:

·       April 15 - June 30: Neighbors fill out the request form for tree placement approval.

·       June 30 - July 30: The team processes approvals for tree permits with the city.

·       September 14: Planting day, where neighbors pick up their trees or coordinate volunteers to plant them.

Accessibility and Assistance: The program is open to all properties within the FMPNA boundaries. Property owners who require financial assistance or are physically unable to plant their trees can indicate this on the inquiry form. Volunteers are available to assist with planting, and training sessions will be provided.

Historical Interpretive Exhibits Grant

It all begins with a memory. The history of the park is cherished by the many residents who played in and visited the park since its grand opening in 1906. The association has received grants to draw out those memories and make them a tangible part of the visitor experience through interpretive signage.

If you would like to be a part of that process, contact John Paulson at jpaulson50@gmail.com and let him know you’d like to contribute photos or memories.
